Growing up, nearly every year around the holidays my family and I would volunteer to make sandwiches or go shopping and donate to a local toy drive. One year, my mom and I were tasked with delivering a handful of gift certificates to families in need so they could buy groceries to make Thanksgiving dinner.
It was such a memorable experience. The first few houses we visited, we knocked on the door apprehensively, hoping they didn’t think we were trying to sell them something. Once we told them why we were there and handed over the little white envelope, we were greeted with smiles, hugs, even tears. It was such a wonderful feeling to connect with people in the community and bring them joy during the holidays.
Remembering that experience has inspired me to get involved this year and I hope it might inspire you too. As we head into the holiday season, it’s a wonderful time to think about giving back to the community by donating food, clothing, or toys to support families in need or volunteering at a local organization.
Cliff’s office, Dwell Realtors, in San Carlos is hosting a holiday food drive for Second Harvest and the Samaritan House and will be collecting non-perishable food items through Friday, Nov. 27. You can drop off food in person Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm at their offices at 1500 Laurel St. Ste. B. We would also be happy to pick up your donations. To schedule a pickup with us, send an email to thefrontporchrwc@gmail.com.
In addition, here are some more ways to get involved in the Bay Area:
- One out of every ten families in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties received food from Second Harvest Food Bank. Support their efforts by volunteering or donating food. They also have a list of special holiday events and promotions for the season.
- The Samaritan House in San Mateo offers a number of services for neighbors to help neighbors in the community. Check out their Holiday Program for ways to donate, volunteer, or sponsor a family.
- St. Anthony’s Padua Dining Room in Menlo Park serves meals 52 weeks a year. They don’t charge fees, ask questions, or turn anyone away. Volunteer to serve a meal, donate food, or contribute to their toy drive this year.
- Habitat for Humanity works to restore homes, revitalize communities, and help people achieve their dream of owning a home. Donate or sign up for one of their volunteer opportunities around the bay.
